Peter walsh
(professional organizer from TLC"S Clean Sweep)has a great idea about finding out if you really wear the clothes in your closet. It takes 6 months. You place all of your clothes on hangers facing the wrong way on the rod. When you wash and return the clothes hang them the normal way and at the end of 6 months the clothes that are still hanging the wrong way. You know you can safely get rid of. We have done this and it works. I am a stay at home mom and there were so many things I though I needed and realized I don't need them.

I hear the 80/20 rule applies to clothes as well -- that we rarely wear 80 percent and could let them go without missing them too much.

I like your "don't hang on to the past" approach about getting rid of clothes that no longer fit.
